#3: We Wear the Mask
In the poem, "We wear the Mask,"
by Paul Lawrence Dunbar. The author emphasizes on the idea of what Blacks were
forced to do so long ago which was to put on “mask” and pretend to be happy,in
order to give the impression that they were fine. People thought they were
happy doing the work they did for the white culture. But, in reality they were
not. For many years, they had to suffer through all the pain of slavery until
they are actually giving their freedom. But, still we can see today in our society
that slavery was no doubt, one of the harshest periods for Blacks.
In today's society, it seems things haven’t
change. Blacks are still been treated with so much disrespect and humiliation.
As we can often see in the news, films, music videos or reality television. Blacks
are often misinterpret as the “bad guy.” As a result, of these stereotypes, Blacks
are always blame for everything. For instance, in United States, you would see
more than often that blacks are always pull over by cop without any reason.Sparking
a lot of controversy, on to why blacks are treated this way? But, I tell you it
is because of names such as “nigger” that makes it fine for people to
misrepresent blacks and treated them as bad as they make out to be. Many of
these racial attitudes are to why blacks are still wearing their “masks” to
hide what they are truly feeling towards the world. Thus, blacks would remain
been oppressed unless we stop making them out as the “bad guy” and start
treated them as real people.
